這是一個很有責任心的教授,所寫的一封信。
這封信的重點,是要告訴我們一些有關寫報告的FAQ。
這是一封很正經的信。
但是,信中的最後一個問題,真是足以讓人笑翻。
在這和各位分享啦!
Dear Students,
BEMM354 international Business Assignment FAQs
I have received many identical questions about the assignments. The following
list of responses to frequently asked questions may save us all some time.
SUBMISSION OF ESSAYS
Please do not ask me questions about the process of submitting assessed essays.
The details are provided in the handbook, on the assignment question sheet and
if you still can't work out what to do the MSc team in XFi may be able to help
you.
REFERENCING
If you need examples of how to reference books, articles and webpages, please
copy the style I use in the handbook for your course.
QUESTION 1
Many of you have completely failed to understand what this question requires.
There is a quote at the beginning of the question. Effectively, you have to
comment on whether you agree or disagree with the quote. The quote suggests
that ONLY two things (i.e. FDI & IIT) are relevant for making countries more
similar. Are these the only two things that make countries more similar? Is
it true that countries are becoming more similar? How can you measure if
countries are becoming more similar?
QUESTION 2
This question is about trade theories. You need to discuss trade theories.
Are some theories more related to accessing markets or to accessing inputs
or both?
QUESTION 3
As I have said many times, quantify means "measure how much". This means you
need real data, i.e. real numbers, perhaps presented as a table, graph or
numerical information in the text. You can't make up numbers. Please don't
send me a list of 3 things asking me if they are "right" as the topics for
your essay. If your 3 topics are government influences on international
business and you have some real data on how much they affect business then
they are likely to be appropriate topics for your essay answer. For each of
the three examples you give, more marks will be awarded for government
influences described fully by data (who is affected and where? By how much?
What other spill-over effects are there and is there data to quantify these
spill-overs too?)
QUESTION 4
Many of you have asked what the "current debate" on trade liberalisation is.
We are really just referring to whether countries are becoming more open or
more protected and why. Perhaps consider which organisations are strongly
involved in overseeing debates on trade liberalisation?
GENERAL POINTS ON USING THEORY
When using theory, you have to start at the beginning. State your assumptions
and assume the reader doesn't know anything.
If the question asks you to introduce, use or apply a theory, you need to
describe and explain it.
You can always use examples in your essays to help explain theory but be aware
of their limitations (sometimes an example will be specific and cannot be
generalised to explain wider relationships).
You always have to balance arguments when writing an essay. Make the case for
and against. However, it is valid to make conclusions in favour of one side of
the argument where your evidence supports that conclusion.
WILL I LOOK AT YOUR ESSAY TO CHECK IT IS OK BEFORE THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE?
Absolutely no way will I consider reading your essay before submission. This
means NO!
